6 Reasons Not to Renew Your Rental Lease

There comes a time in most renters’ lives when a decision has to be made as to whether to renew a rental lease or relocate to a new place. If you are currently struggling with this decision, it can be helpful to consider some of the reasons not to stay. In our experience as seasoned Dallas apartment locators, we’ve found that if any of the following six factors are present, it might be wise to consider moving on to bigger and brighter pastures.

Rental increase. Like it or not, rental increases are a fact of life. How much more you’re comfortable with and capable of spending, on the other hand, might make this factor the do-or-die decision maker. If you’ve received notice that your rates are going up, your best bet is to do a little research to make sure that the new rate is fair and comparable with others in your area (our Dallas apartment finders can tell you this right off the bat). If it’s reasonable and you love the place, stay. If not, start looking.

Life changes. Life moves on and oftentimes at a much faster rate than we realize. Changes like landing a new job, getting married or starting a family might all impact whether or not staying in your current apartment really makes sense. Evaluate your current situation as well as any changes you anticipate over the next year before locking yourself into a new contract.

Landlord problems. Ideally, we all want to be on great terms with our landlords. Unfortunately, this isn’t always going to be the case. If you’ve had issues, whether it’s lack of communication, delays in requested repairs or anything else, now’s the time to reevaluate whether or not you’d like to stay.

Building. Do you really love where you live now? Are there enough amenities to keep you happy, or do you long for more? Location. How close are you to your job? How about your friends? Your favorite restaurants or shops? There are plenty of beautiful neighborhoods in Dallas and each has its own pros and cons. Now that you have the opportunity to start fresh, you may want to reconsider the locale of your residence.

It’s feasible. If you’ve been living in your current apartment for a while now, your circumstances may have changed, particularly in terms of finances. For instance, if you’re making more money now than you were when you moved in, relocating to a new place might be completely doable.
